The Spaniard’s Inn
Pubs - London NW37JJ
Steeped in legend, The Spaniards Inn has been a refuge for rogues and writers since its timbered walls were raised in 1858. Highwayman Dick Turpin allegedly hoisted many a pint here, his trusty steed lodged nearby. Charles Dickens penned it into The Pickwick Papers, Bram Stoker found inspiration for Dracula in its ghost tales, and John Keats is said to have composed Ode to a Nightingale amid its leafy beer garden.
Tucked between Hampstead, Golders Green, and Highgate on the Northern line, The Spaniards rewards those who venture beyond the Underground. After rambling the Heath or Kenwood House, rest in the snug embrace of this historic inn. Updated pub grub and real ales complement the time-worn, rambling rooms.
The inn's name stirs debate - some say it honors former Spanish owners, others the Spanish Ambassador to James II. Regardless, The Spaniards Inn played a memorable role in the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780. Rioters plotting to torch nearby Kenwood House were plied with drink by the shrewd landlord, delaying the mob until soldiers arrived. Thus, this wayfaring pub has long welcomed both scoundrels and defenders within its timbered walls.
